AI local search statistics 2026: 45% of US adults used AI for picks
The 2026 numbers on AI and local search, each from the publisher's own page, with its date and sample size.

45% of US adults used AI for local business recommendations in the past year, up from 6%, and 97% of them check its picks against real reviews at least sometimes. ChatGPT leans on Yelp, Google's AI on the Business Profile, and in one study only 55.58% of ChatGPT's answers about a business matched its Google profile.
These are the 2026 numbers a local business owner needs on AI search, each read on the publisher's own page on 17 October 2026. Every study here comes from a company that sells local marketing, websites or AI visibility software, so each source is labelled as vendor research. Dates and sample sizes are in the text.
What are the key AI local search numbers for 2026?
- 45% of US adults used AI for local recommendations in the past year, up from 6%.1
- 31% of US adults used ChatGPT for a business recommendation, and 23% used Google's AI Mode.2
- 97% of AI users check its picks against real reviews at least sometimes.2
- Yelp appeared in 80% of ChatGPT's local answers.3
- Only 55.58% of ChatGPT's answers about local businesses fully matched their Google Business Profile, and 48.05% of Perplexity's.12
- ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of the locations of multi-location brands; Google's map 3-pack (the three businesses shown with the map) showed them 35.9% of the time.6
- Only 13% of small businesses in a survey of 350 US owners were actively optimizing for AI search.8
How many people use AI to find local businesses?
In BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey, published in February 2026, 45% of 1,002 US adults said they had used ChatGPT or another AI tool for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier.1 That makes AI the third most popular source of business recommendations, behind only Google and Facebook.2
Google is still far ahead, but its share fell from 83% to 71% in a year, while Facebook rose from 40% to 49%. Apple Maps nearly doubled, from 14% to 27%, and local news sites fell from 48% to 29%.1

ChatGPT is the AI tool people use most: 31% of consumers used it for business recommendations in the past 12 months. Next is Google's AI Mode, the chat-style search inside Google, at 23%.2 Use is highest at ages 30 to 44, where 64% had asked AI for a business recommendation, and lowest over 60, at 24%.2
Do people trust AI recommendations for local businesses?
More people trust AI's local picks than distrust them: 40% against 32% of all adults surveyed. 42% of all adults trust AI recommendations as much as traditional reviews.1
Trust depends on use. Among the 455 respondents who had used AI for local recommendations, 63% trust its picks and only 10% distrust them. Among people who have not used it, 53% do not trust them.2
AI summaries of reviews reach even more people. 82% of consumers read AI-generated review summaries, and 23% would decide on the summary alone.1
Do people check what AI tells them?
Almost all of them do. 97% of AI users double-check AI recommendations against real reviews at least some of the time, and 42% of AI users always check the review sites themselves.2 88% of AI users check the sources behind an AI recommendation: 51% to see whether a review is real, and 37% to see where it came from.2

So for many people an AI answer is where the search starts, not where it ends, and the review sites still get a say. That is why the review numbers below matter as much as the AI numbers.
How many reviews do customers expect in 2026?
The bar rose in a year. In the same survey of 1,002 US adults:1
- 74% look for reviews written in the last three months.
- 68% will only use a business with four stars or more, up from 55% in 2025.
- 47% won't use a business with fewer than 20 reviews.
- 31% will only use a business with 4.5 stars or more, up from 17%.

Review count also lines up with whether AI mentions you at all. Insites, which sells AI visibility audits to agencies, studied 10,000 US local businesses in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Businesses that both AIs surfaced had an average of 133 Google reviews; businesses that neither surfaced had 11.5 Their Business Profiles were fuller too: profile completeness was 77.8% for businesses both AIs found, against 31.5% for those neither found.5
Star rating moved far less. Across Insites' recommendation groups, businesses recommended highly, frequently or sometimes all averaged 3.8 stars, and those never recommended averaged 3.3.5 This is a correlation in one vendor's data, not proof that reviews cause recommendations, but it points the same way as the consumer survey.
Where does AI get information about local businesses?
In a study published in August 2026, BrightLocal ran 5 prompts at 9 map points for each of 1,355 business locations in the US, the UK and Australia. It recorded 1,967,762 citations from Google's AI Overviews (the AI summary above Google's results), AI Mode and ChatGPT.3 The engines read different things:
- The Google Business Profile was 28.5% of all citations and was cited for 94% of the businesses.3
- Google's own AI leans on it hardest: it was 67% of the citations AI Overviews gave to third-party sites and 53% of AI Mode's.3
- ChatGPT barely uses it. Yelp appeared in 80% of ChatGPT's answers and supplied 99,281 of the 162,966 citations ChatGPT gave to third-party sites, about 61%.3 BrightLocal links this to Yelp's partnership with OpenAI.
- 415 different directories were cited, and around 93% of the cited domains were individual business websites.3

Your own website counts as well. In the Insites study, a business's website was the most cited source, and ChatGPT referenced it in 72% of awareness and reputation queries.4 For how Google's AI surfaces differ from each other, see AI Overviews vs AI Mode vs Gemini.
How often does AI get a local business's details wrong?
Often enough to check. Insites found that 93% of the 10,000 businesses it studied were known to at least one AI platform, but only 55% had accurate information.4 Its fuller write-up puts it as 55.58% of ChatGPT answers and 48.05% of Perplexity answers fully matching the Google Business Profile.12 The errors it lists are the ones that cost bookings: wrong addresses, wrong opening hours and services that did not match what the business offers. Some details were made up entirely.4
Owners who look find the same thing. In a Squarespace survey of 1,041 business owners in April 2026, about half of them Squarespace customers, 40% of those who had checked how AI describes their business had found incorrect information.7
Because ChatGPT leans on Yelp and Google's AI on the Business Profile, a wrong detail may come from a listing you can fix. Check those two listings and your own site first.
How often does Google show an AI answer on local searches?
Less often than on other searches, at least in 2025. Whitespark, which sells local SEO software, ran 540 searches in three US cities for a study published in May 2025. AI Overviews appeared on 15% of local-intent searches, like a service and a city, and 92% of informational ones; the map pack appeared on 93% of local-intent searches.11 This is older than the other studies here.
How often does AI recommend a local business at all?
Less often than Google's map results do. SOCi, which sells local marketing software to chains, measured 2,751 multi-location brands across more than 350,000 locations for its 2026 Local Visibility Index, published in January 2026. Their locations appeared in Google's local 3-pack (the three businesses shown with the map) 35.9% of the time on average, but ChatGPT recommended just 1.2% of them.6
In SOCi's own summary of the index, Gemini recommended brands 11% of the time.10 These are chain locations, not independent businesses, so read the numbers as a sign of how selective AI answers are, not as your own odds.
Have small business owners checked what AI says about them?
Most have not. In the Squarespace survey (1,041 owners in North America, the UK and Australia, April 2026), over two-thirds had not yet looked at how their business shows up in AI answers, and nearly 6 in 10 said they do not know where to start.7
Bluehost's May 2026 survey of 350 US owners of businesses with 1 to 50 employees asked a related question: are they acting on AI search? Only 13% were actively optimizing for it. 31% knew it existed but not where to start, and 22% heard of it for the first time in the survey. 78% said they want to see how their competitors appear in AI answers.8
What should a local business do with these numbers?
- Look before you fix. Ask ChatGPT and Google's AI the questions your customers ask, with your city in them, and note who they name and what they say about you. How to check if ChatGPT recommends your business walks through it. The free check on the Seenboard home page shows whether ChatGPT and Google's AI recommend you, who they pick instead and what they get wrong, in about 2 minutes with no card.9
- Fix facts where AI reads them. Claim and complete your Business Profile for Google's AI, fix your Yelp listing for ChatGPT, and keep your own website current for both.3 In the Insites data, profile completeness was 77.8% for businesses both AIs found, against 31.5% for those neither found.5
- Ask for reviews every month. 47% of people skip businesses with fewer than 20 reviews, and 74% look at the last three months.1 Review count lines up with AI recommendations more than stars do.5
- Keep technical work in proportion. Insites found no meaningful link between AI visibility and Core Web Vitals (Google's page speed scores), structured data, llms.txt or FAQ schema.4 More on that in does schema or llms.txt help AI search.
If you want to track this every week rather than check once, the best AI visibility tools for small businesses compares the options.
How were these numbers chosen?
Every figure links to the publisher's own page below, read on 17 October 2026, and the per-engine citation shares are our arithmetic from BrightLocal's counts. The studies use different samples, engines and countries: the consumer survey covers US adults, the citation study spans the US, the UK and Australia, the two owner surveys ask different questions, and the Whitespark study is from 2025. Compare them with that in mind.
