Does schema or llms.txt help you show up in AI answers?
What the evidence says about schema markup and llms.txt, what Google and Microsoft say, and what to work on instead.

Not on the evidence so far. Vendor tests by Ahrefs and SE Ranking found no clear lift in AI citations from schema or llms.txt, and Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special markup. In a study of 10,000 US local businesses, reviews and a complete Business Profile lined up with being found.
Schema markup and llms.txt are often suggested as fixes for AI search. Here is what the evidence says, what Google and Microsoft say, and where your time goes further.
Does schema markup help you show up in AI search?
Not on the evidence so far. Schema markup, also called structured data, is code that labels the facts on a web page for machines: this is the business name, these are the hours, this is a review.
One large local study found no sign that it gets you into AI answers. Insites, which sells AI visibility software to agencies, checked 10,000 US local businesses in ChatGPT and Perplexity.1 Structured data, FAQ schema, llms.txt, page speed and Core Web Vitals showed no meaningful link to AI visibility.2
Some caveats. It is a vendor study of businesses drawn from Insites' own audit platform, it measures correlation, not cause, and it covered ChatGPT and Perplexity, not Google's AI.3 Insites has so far published only summaries, not the full report.4
Ahrefs, which sells SEO software, ran a second test that did include Google. It tracked 1,885 pages that added schema between August 2025 and March 2026 against similar pages that did not.5
AI Mode and ChatGPT citations did not move beyond noise, and AI Overviews citations fell slightly.5 Every page in the test was already cited often, so it says less about a site AI has never cited.
What do Google and Microsoft say about markup for AI answers?
Google's guide for site owners says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup, and that there is no special schema.org structured data to add.6
To be eligible, a page has to be indexed and able to show a snippet in Google Search, as for regular results, and meeting that is no guarantee of being shown.6 For how Google's AI surfaces differ from each other, see AI Overviews vs AI Mode vs Gemini.
Microsoft is more positive. A Bing product manager writes that schema helps search engines and AI systems understand your content, and recommends it for content you want in AI search answers.7 That is a claim about understanding a page, not a promise of being named.
What is llms.txt, and does it help?
llms.txt is a proposed file, written in Markdown and placed at an address such as yoursite.com/llms.txt, that gives AI tools a short summary of a site with links to its key pages. The name comes from LLM, short for large language model, the kind of AI behind ChatGPT and Gemini.
Jeremy Howard proposed it on 3 September 2024, and the proposal says it is used most heavily for software documentation.8 Chrome's Lighthouse now looks for the file as part of its checks for AI agents that browse sites.9
The evidence that it helps a business get named is thin. In a study reported in November 2025, SE Ranking, an SEO software company, checked nearly 300,000 domains: 10.13% had the file, and it found no effect on how often a domain is cited by AI.1011
SE Ranking itself calls llms.txt an optional experiment, though a low-effort one that may matter later, and notes that it does not override robots.txt.10 Google says AI text files are not needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode.6

Should you remove the schema you already have?
No. Google still counts structured data that matches the visible page among the SEO basics worth doing.6 Just do not expect it to get you named in AI answers, and do not let it push out the work below.
What helps you show up in AI answers instead?
In the Insites data, the signals that lined up with being surfaced were about the business, not the code.2
Reviews
Businesses that ChatGPT and Perplexity both surfaced averaged 133 Google reviews. Businesses that neither surfaced averaged 11.2 Review volume had the strongest link to AI visibility in the study, and Insites adds that reviews naming the service and the place give AI more to go on.2 Make asking for a review part of every finished job.
A complete, claimed Business Profile

Businesses both AIs found had far more complete profiles than those neither found, and were far more likely to have claimed them and added photos.1 Claim your profile, fill in every field and add real photos of your work.
Google's own guide lists an up-to-date Business Profile among the basics.6 In BrightLocal's own study of local answers in AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT, Google Business Profile made up 28.5% of all citations.12 For more numbers, see AI local search statistics for 2026.
Clear pages about what you do and where
Your own website still counts, as words on the page rather than code. In the Insites data, a business's own website was the most cited source, and ChatGPT referenced it in 72% of awareness and reputation queries.2 Businesses AI found had more than double the pages on average.2
Google asks for the same thing: important content available as text.6 A clear page for each service and each area you cover, kept up to date, gives AI the facts that schema only labels.
Open doors for AI crawlers
AI search crawlers need to be let in before they can read your pages. OpenAI says sites that block its OAI-SearchBot crawler will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, apart from navigational links.13
Google asks site owners to allow crawling in robots.txt, the file that tells bots what they may open, and in any CDN (content delivery network) or hosting setup.6 The Seenboard free check tests whether 7 AI crawlers can open your home page.14
Accurate details

Insites compared what ChatGPT and Perplexity said about each business with its Google Business Profile. Only 55.58% of ChatGPT answers and 48.05% of Perplexity answers fully matched; the most common error was a wrong phone number, then a wrong website.15 Insites notes some mismatches may come from an out-of-date profile rather than the AI.15

FAQ
Does schema markup help with Google AI Overviews?
Not in any special way. Google says there is no special schema.org structured data to add for AI Overviews or AI Mode. To be eligible, a page must be indexed and able to show a snippet, and even then it is not guaranteed to appear. When Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added schema, their AI Overviews citations did not rise.
Does FAQ schema help you get into AI answers?
Not on the evidence so far. Insites found no meaningful link between FAQ schema and AI visibility across 10,000 US local businesses in ChatGPT and Perplexity. Write your questions and answers as visible text on the page instead: Google asks that important content be available as text.
Should I add an llms.txt file to my website?
Only if it takes minutes. SE Ranking found no effect on AI citations across nearly 300,000 domains, and Google says AI text files are not needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Work on reviews, your Business Profile, clear service pages, accurate details and crawler access first.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. The robots.txt file tells crawlers which pages they may open. llms.txt is a proposed summary of your site for AI tools, and it does not override robots.txt: if robots.txt blocks a crawler, an llms.txt file will not let it in.
What matters most for showing up in AI answers?
In Insites' study of 10,000 US local businesses, Google review volume had the strongest link to being surfaced. A complete, claimed profile with photos and a website with more pages also lined up with it. Keep your details accurate too: only 55.58% of ChatGPT answers fully matched the business's Google Business Profile.
